Paramedic licensing and oversight by province
Paramedic regulation differs a lot across Canada. Some provinces have a regulatory college. In others, the province licenses paramedics directly or no regulatory body exists yet. We explain the route for each province.
| Province or territory | Oversight |
|---|---|
| British Columbia | Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (BC Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Branch), under the Emergency Health Services Act. Licence levels are First Responder, Emergency Medical Responder, Primary Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Paramedic, Critical Care Paramedic and Infant Transport Team. |
| Alberta | Alberta College of Paramedics |
| Saskatchewan | Saskatchewan College of Paramedics |
| Manitoba | College of Paramedics of Manitoba |
| Ontario | No regulatory college for paramedics as of 2026. Paramedics are certified through provincial base hospital programs under the Ministry of Health. A proposed College of Paramedics has not been established. |
| New Brunswick | Paramedic Association of New Brunswick, the regulatory authority for paramedics |
| Nova Scotia | Nova Scotia Regulator of Paramedicine (formerly the College of Paramedics of Nova Scotia) |
| Prince Edward Island | College of Paramedicine of Prince Edward Island (self-regulating since April 1, 2024) |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | Newfoundland and Labrador Paramedicine Regulation, within the provincial Department of Health and Community Services |
| Northwest Territories | No territorial paramedic regulatory framework at this time. Paramedics generally hold registration from another Canadian jurisdiction. |
| Yukon and Nunavut | We confirm the route with the territorial government before we advise a candidate. |
Nursing roles are registered with provincial nursing regulators. See our registered nurse page for the list.
Good to know: A paramedic moving provinces may need to meet extra steps. Services also commonly expect current certifications such as ACLS and PALS, and a driver abstract, but requirements are set by each employer. We do not currently place in Quebec.
Emergency staffing challenges we hear about
24/7 coverage
Ambulances and ED shifts run all day, every day, so absences are felt right away.
Fatigue and call volume
High call volume and operational stress can cause burnout and turnover. Services need steady relief to protect crews.
Rural and remote stations
A small crew pool and long response areas make single absences hard to cover.
Multiple certifications
ACLS, PALS and employer-specific driver and vehicle requirements slow onboarding.
Seasonal and event demand
Summer events, festivals and camp rotations create temporary spikes.
Shift and coverage models
Shift patterns
Day, night, 12 hour and rotating schedules, per service and union agreement where applicable.
Relief and casual
Filling gaps on short notice or booked in advance.
Rotation work
Fly-in and remote site rotations with set time on and time off.
Contract and permanent
Longer arrangements through our contract and relief staffing and direct hire services.
Many public EMS services operate under collective agreements. We work within those terms where they apply.

How we are different
We verify credentials
We verify registration and certifications and say so. It is a check at a point in time, not a guarantee.
We are clear about terms
Candidates pay nothing. We are paid by the employer.

Emergency and transport staffing questions
Do you place paramedics across Canada?
We work with employers and candidates in every province and territory except Quebec. Licensing differs by province, so we confirm the route for each placement. Tell us the service type and the certification level you need or hold, and we will talk through what applies.
Does a paramedic licence transfer between provinces?
Not automatically. Each province has its own licensing or registration route, and extra steps can apply. We help candidates understand them, and we tell employers what to expect before a paramedic from another province starts work.
Do you place nurses in patient transport?
Yes, including emergency and critical care nurses for transfer teams, depending on employer need. Tell us the type of transfer, the patient population and the certifications required, such as ACLS or PALS, and we will scope the search from there.
Can you supply event or remote site medics?
We can search for candidates with the right licence and certifications. Requirements vary by site and province, so we ask about the site, the rotation, the level of care required and any travel arrangements before we begin searching.
Does it cost paramedics anything to use your service?
No. Our service is free for candidates. Always. Employers pay fees, which are agreed in writing first. You will not be asked to pay to submit a profile, to be considered for a role or to be placed.
