Frequently asked questions
Do I need CSMLS certification to work as an MLT in Canada?
CSMLS certification is accepted anywhere in Canada and is required in most regulated provinces. Employers in provinces that do not regulate MLTs also commonly ask for it. Tell us what you hold and where you want to work, and we will say which roles may fit.
Do I need provincial registration too?
In the provinces that regulate the profession, yes. These are Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Check with the regulator in the province where you will work, because requirements can change and moving provinces may mean new registration.
Can medical laboratory assistants apply?
This page covers MLTs. Roles for assistants are different. If you are an MLA or have a need for assistants, tell us about it and we will say whether we can help, rather than promise something we cannot deliver.
Do you place relief MLTs?
Yes, where labs need coverage, for example for leaves, vacancies or busy periods. Submit your profile with your certification, discipline and availability, and we will introduce you to labs that match. Contract and permanent roles are also available.
Can internationally educated lab professionals work in Canada?
Through credential assessment, certification and provincial registration where required. We cannot certify you, and we do not guarantee outcomes, but we can point you to the right starting point and talk through opportunities once your credentials are in place.
Does it cost anything to submit my profile?
No. It is free for candidates. Always. We are paid by the facility, never by you. You will not be asked for a fee to submit your profile, to be introduced to labs or to accept a role.
