Ontario

The Ontario College of Pharmacists calls the role the designated manager. Under the Drug and Pharmacies Regulation Act, the designated manager is the pharmacist the owner designates as responsible for managing the pharmacy, and carries the same accountability for compliance as the owner and corporate directors.

British Columbia

Under the Pharmacy Operations and Drug Scheduling Act, the pharmacy manager is a pharmacist, designated on the pharmacy licence, who holds full registration with the College of Pharmacists of BC. Community pharmacy managers complete board-approved manager training within one year of appointment and every three years after that.

Alberta

The Alberta College of Pharmacy licenses each pharmacy to a licensee, who must be a pharmacist and who actively manages the pharmacy. A separate proprietor's representative directs the operation and supports the licensee. Licensee and Proprietor Education Programs apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is a designated manager in Ontario?

A pharmacist designated by the pharmacy owner as responsible for managing the pharmacy. The designated manager carries the same accountability for compliance as the owner and corporate directors, and the Ontario College of Pharmacists sets expectations for the role. We explain what that means for a candidate before any introduction is made.

Does a pharmacy manager have to be a pharmacist?

In Ontario, BC and Alberta, yes. The designated manager, pharmacy manager or licensee is a pharmacist. Other provinces have their own rules, which we confirm at the start of a search, so that every candidate presented meets the requirement that applies to your pharmacy.

Do you recruit hospital pharmacy directors?

We can discuss it. These searches are usually considered for a retained approach, given the seniority and confidentiality involved. Tell us about the department and the setting, and we will talk through what is realistic and how the search would run before you commit to anything.

Can you place a relief pharmacist while I search?

We can discuss relief options through our contract and relief staffing service. Availability depends on the region, so we talk through what is realistic for your pharmacy and whether relief cover should run while a manager search is under way.

Do you guarantee a hire?

No. We verify registration and manage the process. We do not promise outcomes. We confirm registration and standing with the provincial college before presenting a candidate, and the decision to hire and to designate a manager stays between you and the pharmacist.
